Public Awareness, Education, & Training Committee

The Public Awareness, Education, & Training Committee addresses activities in the State Plan to address the goal: Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families educate their communities about intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Purpose

  1. Creating public awareness campaign to promote Developmental Disabilities and Disability Employment Awareness month, as well as Developmental Disabilities related issues and concerns with legislators during yearly Day at the Capitol Event.

  2. Educating business and community members about what Developmental Disabilities are.

  3. Facilitating a working group to improve the intake process for Developmental Disabilities Division and develop informational fact sheets for the public about services for all individuals with DD.

  4. Encouraging Self-advocates to support initiatives that were important to their communities such as putting in crosswalk signals.

  5. Updating our web sites for the Council and SAAC including current agendas, minutes, and calendars.

What is the DD Council? 

The Hawai‘i State Council on Developmental Disabilities or DD Council consists of 28 Governor-appointed members that includes individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD), parents, family members, and representatives from public and private agencies that serve this population. At least 61% of the council (17 members) must be a person with I/DD or a family member of a person with I/DD. View the DD Council Fact Sheet for more information.
